OpenAI on Tuesday pushed Codex out of its developer cradle and into the cubicle, releasing six role-specific plugins, a hosted Sites feature, and in-place Annotations aimed squarely at finance, legal, and other knowledge-work professions. The pitch, delivered one day after Anthropic confidentially filed its S-1 with the SEC, makes the timing legible: the enterprise AI race is now a public-markets story.
The numbers carry the framing. OpenAI says Codex has 5 million weekly active users, more than six times its February desktop-app baseline. Knowledge workers, roughly 20 percent of the base, are growing more than three times as fast as developers. The plugins ship with 62 bundled business applications and 110 automated skills, with Sites launch partners including Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, Emergent, and lighter-weight challengers like LemonLime, alongside enterprise anchors Snowflake, Figma, and Salesforce on the workspace side.
“AI is becoming capable of doing increasingly meaningful work inside organizations. The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses,” chief revenue officer Denise Dresser said in a statement.
That’s narrative management in its purest form. Three weeks after OpenAI unveiled the OpenAI Deployment Company, backed by more than $4 billion in funding, the company is signaling to enterprise buyers that Codex is now a category, not a coding tool. Bloomberg reports legal and corporate-finance features are next, with further ChatGPT integrations expected.
Anthropic’s S-1 is the unspoken context. Both labs are racing to convert frontier-model hype into the kind of recurring enterprise revenue that bankers can underwrite. The vibes are familiar: it looks a lot like the 2014–2015 SaaS land grab, except the seats being sold this time aren’t for humans.
