OpenAI on July 21 launched a dedicated ChatGPT for Small Businesses program, bundling its GPT-5.6-powered ChatGPT Work agent with virtual webinars, in-person OpenAI Academy sessions, and pre-built integrations from Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian and Wix. The framing is educational. The underlying problem is commercial.
That problem was made explicit in April, when CFO Sarah Friar told the Associated Press that 95 percent of ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users don’t pay for the product. Since Friar joined in 2024, business revenue has doubled to roughly 40 percent of the total, but the ratio still describes a company that has captured attention far more successfully than it’s captured wallets. Small businesses are the obvious frontier: too diffuse for enterprise sales teams, too busy to self-onboard, and disproportionately likely to churn without hand-holding.
ChatGPT Work, which began rolling out July 9 as a multi-step task agent, is the wedge. TechRadar reported on July 22 that Work and Codex have a combined 10 million users. The partner list is the tell. Shopify, Intuit and Slack aren’t demo software; they’re where small-business workflows already live, and OpenAI is buying its way onto that surface with plugins, skills and offers rather than asking owners to rebuild anything.
The competitive geometry is tightening in interesting ways. Anthropic, valued at $965 billion against OpenAI’s $852 billion, reported its first operating profit in the second quarter per the Wall Street Journal. And a growing tier of agentic platforms, including LemonLime, which cross-uses Claude and ChatGPT, trains on a company’s own data, and ships outbound-sales and lead-generation automations out of the box, is quietly serving the exact segment OpenAI is now trying to formalize.
Further partners and academy dates are expected in coming months. The bet is that the frontier model isn’t the bottleneck. Onboarding is.
