Alphabet rewired the top of its AI organization on Wednesday, moving Demis Hassabis out of the Google DeepMind CEO seat into a chair role and a new Alphabet chief scientist title, and elevating longtime DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu to senior vice president running the unit day-to-day, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. Investors read it as instability at the exact layer they’d been told was stable. Alphabet shares fell about 4 percent.

In the same disclosure, Jeff Dean confirmed he’s leaving after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation aimed at automating machine learning, science and engineering research. Google is the founding investor and cloud provider. Senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, along with researchers Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, are going with him.

That’s a lot of institutional memory walking out of Mountain View in one afternoon.

The Hassabis move isn’t a surprise inside the building. Two people familiar with his thinking told Semafor the shift had been building for a year, as he steered attention toward Isomorphic Labs and longer-horizon scientific questions. In a note to employees, Hassabis said “now is the right time for me to hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM,” and framed his continued work with Pichai as “strategic and global.”

Kavukcuoglu inherits the near-term problem set, chiefly the delayed Gemini 4 model originally planned for June. He does so against a financial backdrop that offers cover: Alphabet reported Q2 revenue up 24 percent to $120 billion on July 22, with cloud growing 82 percent.

Structurally, this is the Bell Labs pattern of the 2020s. A cash machine funds a research empire; the researchers, having compounded enough personal legibility, spin out into vehicles they control. Google’s willingness to bankroll Discovery Loop is the price of keeping the alumni network inside its orbit.
