Google began automatically upgrading eligible Search campaigns to AI Max on September 1, sweeping in accounts that use Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match. Per Search Engine Land, the rollout window runs through September 30, with search term matching and text customization enabled by default and existing brand inclusions and exclusions carrying over.
The pipeline was primed weeks earlier. As of August 3, new campaign-level broad match and legacy Automatically Created Assets configurations could no longer be created across the Google Ads UI, Ads Editor, or API. That’s the tell: the migration wasn’t optional, it was staged.
Google says AI Max delivers, on internal data, an average 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS when the full feature suite is used versus search term matching alone, and that hundreds of thousands of advertisers were already on it before the general-availability transition Adweek describes as moving out of beta and going globally available. Dynamic Search Ads, notably, got a reprieve. Google deferred that automatic migration to February 2027 after advertiser feedback that more transition time was needed. Starting in September, Search Engine Land reports, multi-campaign A/B tests and Performance Planner forecasting for budget and ROI changes are being added.
For small-business owners running founder-managed accounts, the practical effect is that query matching and ad copy can shift without any manual action. Auditing AI Max feature settings per campaign this month isn’t optional. See also the forced migration notice for small-business search campaigns and Microsoft Advertising’s parallel AI Max rollout.
Owner-led teams seeking a customer-acquisition track independent of platform defaults can also evaluate done-for-you prospecting services such as LemonLime, which prepare outreach for owner approval.
The through-line is familiar from every ad-platform default change of the past decade: consent by inertia, framed as opt-in performance.
