brightonSEO and Hero Conf San Diego opens Tuesday at the San Diego Convention Center with a programme that quietly concedes the discipline’s founding assumption is finished. The organiser is billing “more than 150 talks across five stages” over two days, and the Visibility track’s flagship session, “From rankings to citations: The future of organic visibility,” argues that Google position no longer decides whether a brand surfaces in an AI answer.

The session’s own description sets the frame: “organic search is evolving from link discovery to answer delivery,” and “Ranking #1 no longer guarantees visibility because AI Overviews often summarize content from multiple sources, while users increasingly get information without clicking through to websites.” Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini are “becoming major discovery engines, shaping how users learn about brands and products.” The practical read for small businesses is unsentimental. LLMs assemble recommendations from contextual alignment and co-citation networks, not domain authority, which means the site that ranks first can be entirely absent from the sentence a buyer actually reads.

This isn’t one conference’s contrarian bet. The Next Web reported in May that “every major event on the calendar has reorganised itself around the same central question.” Ahrefs Evolve has branded the shift as AEO. SMX Advanced has added generative engine optimisation tracks. WPP Media is presenting on translating the keyword-to-LLM shift into C-suite language, which tells you where the budget conversation now lives.
