brightonSEO opened in San Diego on Tuesday alongside Hero Conf with a research track making a blunt claim: a #1 Google ranking no longer guarantees a brand appears in answers produced by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, or Gemini. The visibility program frames the shift as a move from “query → list of links → website visit” to “query → AI-generated answer → cited sources.”

The headline data comes from WLDM’s AI Research Lab, which has analysed more than 11 million AI citations and logged over 2,000 hours of AI citations research. WLDM describes AI citation as a “data science problem” and says its methodology engineers signals disclosed in the 2024 Google API leak, including siteFocusScore, siteEmbedding, and pageEmbedding. The through-line: contextual alignment and co-citation networks are doing the work that domain authority used to.

Sebastian Pawlowski’s session, drawing on 300,000 SERPs, introduces “Hidden Demand,” a category of consumer intent invisible to legacy rank-tracking tools. It’s a small phrase carrying a large concession, that a decade of SEO measurement now maps imperfectly onto how prospects actually encounter brands.

The practical implication is unsentimental. A business that spent years accreting SEO authority can be entirely absent from the AI answer a prospect reads before deciding whom to contact. brightonSEO’s GEO course material names the input signals that do earn citations: question-format content, first-party data, entity consistency, and mentions and co-citations across review sites, marketplaces, and listicles.

The finding lands into a familiar week. It follows the IAB’s raised U.S. ad forecast as AI discovery fractures the funnel, the arrival of Google’s AI search visibility reports for business websites, and Brainlabs’ finding that AI referrals convert at higher rates. Sessions continue through Wednesday.
