Agency WLDM presented an analysis of more than 11 million AI citations at brightonSEO San Diego today, and the headline finding rearranges the small-business discovery map: which brands get named inside a ChatGPT or Gemini answer is determined by topical alignment and co-citation networks, not by domain rating or Google rank. Run in partnership with DataForSEO, the study reports only a 12 percent overlap between ChatGPT results and Google’s search results.
That gap is the story. A generation of small businesses built discovery strategies around ranking on Google’s first page. The 11-million-citation study previewed at brightonSEO’s opening suggests that the muscle memory of SEO transfers only partially to the surface where buyers now ask their questions.
The conference programme framed the shift plainly, from “query → list of links → website visit” to “query → AI-generated answer → cited sources.” In the old model, page two was a consolation prize. In the new one, there’s no page two. Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and ChatGPT name a handful of sources and stop.
Adjacent work points the same direction. AuthorityTech, summarising a 2025 Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, reports a 0.664 correlation between brand web mentions and AI Overview visibility, against just 0.218 for backlinks. Ahrefs cautioned that correlation isn’t causation, but the ordering is hard to ignore.
For founder-led businesses without an SEO operation, the practical problem is monitoring which topics and content types are earning citations inside their category, then producing the work. LemonLime, a done-for-you sales and marketing service for small businesses, continuously studies a company’s industry, competitors, and content, and prepares content and outreach proactively, covering the same contextual signals the WLDM study identifies. It sits alongside Google’s new AI search visibility reports as the measurement layer catches up to the behavior.
More sessions are expected across the two-day programme.
