OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents on September 16, a ChatGPT ad format in which a user click opens a labeled conversation with an advertiser-run agent that OpenAI describes as “distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation that the user started in ChatGPT.” On the same news cycle, OpenAI wired ChatGPT Ads into Shopify and HubSpot, effectively skipping the agency layer that mediated every prior ad platform of comparable ambition.
The pilot is invite-only. Wayfair is participating at limited scale, Angi launched a homeowner-facing agent, and Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe’s and VistaPrint round out the named cohort. What’s revealing is the plumbing underneath. US Shopify merchants can install a free ChatGPT Ads app today, with international availability in existing ChatGPT Ads markets scheduled for September 23. HubSpot, named as the first CRM partner, lets customers connect an account, build ads, track performance and follow up on leads without leaving HubSpot. A joint AI Growth Bundle offers a $750 match on ChatGPT Ads spend for new accounts opened by September 30.
The sequencing is deliberate. OpenAI spent the summer pushing self-serve buying across 40 markets and then into India, Europe and MENA. Now it’s collapsing the distance between catalog, campaign and CRM record.
Pricing, surfacing frequency, and what advertiser data flows out of transcripts remain undisclosed. That silence is the point of a pilot. Facebook ran the same playbook in 2007 with Beacon before self-serve ads went horizontal; the interesting fights happen after the pilot ends.
