Conductor promoted Chief Product Officer Wei Zheng to CEO on September 24, naming answer engine optimization the central focus of the company’s next chapter and moving co-founder Seth Besmertnik to the board after roughly two decades at the helm. The enterprise SEO platform paired the leadership change with a growth number designed to travel: Conductor AI, launched a year ago, reported 12-fold year-over-year customer growth and new-logo additions tripling quarter over quarter, with Charter, Airbnb, Coca-Cola and Atlassian named among adopters.

The framing matters as much as the numbers. Besmertnik built Conductor from 2006, sold it to WeWork in 2018, and led the employee buyback in 2019, a lineage that gives the pivot away from classic SEO its symbolic weight. When the founder of a two-decade search company steps back at the same moment his successor renames the mission around AI citation, that’s not a routine promotion. It’s the market telling on itself.

“AEO is no longer just a visibility strategy or another marketing channel,” Zheng said in the announcement, adding that enterprises now need to understand “why they are — or aren’t — being recommended” in answers generated by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

The structural read is straightforward. Buyers increasingly ask an answer engine who to call rather than clicking a ranked list, and the citation layer beneath those answers is volatile: a recent study found AI platforms drop 39 percent of cited brands weekly, a churn rate corroborated by the 11-million-query citation dataset presented at BrightonSEO and made legible to smaller operators by Google’s rollout of AI search visibility reporting to every business website.

Conductor will preview new AEO products at its C3 event in New York on October 28. The category is being named in real time, by the incumbent that has the most to lose by naming it late.
